Help Us Build A List of Politicians On Substack
From Kamala Harris, Beto O’Rourke, Adam Kinzinger, and Jeff Jackson, to Governor Newsom, DNI Tulsi Gabbard, and Pete Buttigieg how are politicians using Substack?
SCROLL DOWN FOR OUR UPDATED ALPHABETICAL LIST, UPDATED TO SEPTEMBER 20, 2025Just recently, Emily Sundberg suggested “there are about to be a lot more brands using Substack as a marketing channel.”
As we suggested in our latest newsletter, Substack is growing and shifting priorities.
It is definitely growing with independent journalist. Chris Cillizza said it best: “Substack is no longer simply something a journalist who has been cast off or cast aside from legacy media does until he or she finds their next gig in that legacy media world. It has become something that you can do INSTEAD of working a job in legacy media.”
In early February, Substack co-founder Hamish McKenzie pointed out on Notes: “There has been a massive surge in support and audience for independent publishers on Substack as people try to make sense of the political upheaval in the US.”
So, what about the political space? For now, it seems that in this space Substack is dominated by pundits, political strategists and commentators, content creators and journalists (independent or otherwise)… But are politicians themselves using Substack? And how? Are they active, or just passive readers?
When former U.S. Congressman Beto O’Rourke joined Substack last week, Emily Sundberg commented: “So glad that the skateboarding community is growing on this platform.”
Catherine Valentine, head of politics at Substack, said: “Texas has joined the Substack party, y’all.”
… So, we embarked in this venture to map politicians on the platform.
Help us! Leave a comment below if you know of other politicians using Substack or if you have suggestions on how to make this list better, more complete, or if we need to correct mistakes.
Of note, there are no world leaders, nor American past or current presidents on Substack.
However, former Vice President Kamala Harris launched her own Substack in September 2025. Substack co-founder and CEO Chris Best welcomed her on the platform with a simple Note: Welcome!
Former Presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and former First Ladies Michelle Obama, Laura Bush, and Hillary Clinton are to join Substack in 2026 for a In Pursuit project for America 250.
In addition, 30 out of the 100 United States Senators are already on Substack!
In the words of Dan Rather and Team Steady: “We should be grateful and thankful that forums like Substack exist.” And this is why we want to contribute to this awesome platform with a list of politician voices here on Substack. We think it could be a useful tool for everybody interested in politics and foreign policy like us!
And Substack is not just a growing tool for politics, but also for diplomacy and foreign policy:
List of politicians on Substack
* Hear us out: this is not a ranking and it’s not a perfect list. It includes current and former elected officials at the national and state level, as well as political appointees at the White House or other departments and agencies.
